Credo of the International Art Workshops - Pienkow

Art represents the essence of human dignity.  The spirits of all nations and cultures are built from art and her foundations.  For the Polish nation, Szczerbiec, the sword of King Piast, Matejko's painting of the Victory of Grunwald, Chopin's Poloneise and Szmborska's poems are among a few chef d'oeuvres that define the spirit of Poland as a nation.

Today's young artists struggle for their artistic survival and identity.  The educational system currently fosters dependency on the market.  The state does not support budding artists and business corrupts them in order to produce corporate profits.  Many of them lose faith in their destiny as artists and are hired for business production and therefore deprived of their artistic passions by the demands of daily life.  They have little guidance in their artistic direction and challenges.  Everyday, the media pursues these young artists not for works of artistic integrity but for works that create media sensation.  Technology corrupts young artists by defining and visualizing their means of expression and facilitating mass production.  I feel a personal duty to continue to foster the development of the arts.  I call on everyone with their means to support the arts in order to reverse the current declining trends and revive our artistic culture.

The Marek Maria Pienkowski Foundation sponsors "Pienkow International Art Workshops" on a yearly basis.  Based on recommendations of the deans of respected art schools we invite young artists, up to 10 years after graduation, to apply for competitive admission to our workshops.  Our intention is to invite artists from one Polish center and two international schools in order to represent different trends in art.  From the application the Selection Committee chooses up to ten winners (20-30% of overall applications) and invites them for this two-week workshop.  The participants are offered full accommodations and facilities to work as well as to have creative exchange and discussion in a free, uninhibited, but competitive environment.

Based on artwork created during the Workshop, our Committee selects one winner of the contest and the foundation offers a $5,000 grand prize.  The winner is invited to participate as a juror for the next year's Pienkow Workshop and his/her art will be presented in a local gallery.  The art of all participants will be presented in at least two exhibitions in renowned galleries in Poland or abroad.  All participants of the Pienkow Workshop are invited to join our artistic family, the "Pienkow Art Group".  The Foundation supports a variety of activities by members of the group from private exhibitions to presentations on our web page, art.pienkow.com.

Two to three years after participation in our Workshop, any members of the Pienkow Art Group may choose to participate in the award for "the best three year artistic progress" contests.  The Foundation will fund the winner a stipend of two to three months support to live and work in one of the prominent art centers.  Finally, we plan a "best 10 year artistic progress" contest with a $50,000 grand prize.
